Have you looked at the possibility of solar tubes? They appear to be an efficient transmitter of light with better resistance to heat flow.

Derek,

Thanks for the comments. The front facade is the North side of the home. We are trying to minimize the amount of windows on the north side while still providing adequate light and views to the street level. We have not got into calculating glazings as of yet.

We are aware of the heat loss due to windows which is why we have not included any skylights which is common to almost all modern homes nowadays. I will also be posting soon on possible options for thermal shading of the North facing windows at a minimum to cut down on the loss of conditioned air.

We will also be reducing the amount of West facing windows on the corner house and adding shading elements. We will have no East facing windows on either home due to the Rowhouse configuration.

I haven't calculated the window area on the South facade yet but will make sure to do so soon.

Careful about the proportion of unshaded east/west glazing. Can be sources of uncomfortable heat gain in summer.

Rule of thumb is South face (7-12% of floor area),

It looks like you are using clerestory windows on your facade (presumably north facing).

What kind of glazing or window coverings you are using?

Remember that hot air rises and clerestory windows can be a big source of heat loss. Similarly, they need to be shaded adequately in summer.
