Not crazy about the haphazard placement of the windows. One of the bigger regrets I have about my remodel is that I did not place the kitchen sink closer to the window. You should come over and check out my place, it's the non-updated version of your project.

Good points on the windows Roxanne. We have been trying to think about where people will most likely be putting furniture. The one place where we may have a window a bit low is in the living room (seen in the last image). All the others should be positioned well for either tables or chairs to fit beneath them.

As for art, we have a lot of wall space on the side walls that could be used. There are more side windows in the 120k house which is shown in the renderings, but there should still be ample space for art to be hung.

Great work on your project BTW. I like those solar, LED lights you just found and have been thinking about putting them in the sidewalk surrounding the homes if we have to redo them after construction.

Great renderings. These are very useful tools to analyze the interiors. I really love the vertical window slots that dance around the exterior walls. Although these windows add great animation, you might want to consider some walls where artwork can be placed without competing with these windows. By having some solid walls or just solid zones, it might even make these windows have even more of an impact.
In the rush to get our drawings done and our house under construction, we neglected to fully consider furniture placement in 2 locations. We placed and sized windows from the exterior elevations, but wished we would have adjusted the sizes & location slightly to make the interiors more flexible. Coulda shoulda woulda!

Agree on the nice renders; very natural. What software are you using for this?

Excellent thought Gina. This is actually something I have been struggling with a bit. We are trying to keep the utilities and especially the plumbing in a central location or I would love to have the sink along the back wall looking out into the back yard.

The main issue with placing the sink in the island is having to also locate the dishwasher in the island as well which does not allow us to build the negative space below the island. We could go with a drawer dishwasher, but that ups our budget and reduces the capacity of dishwashing loads that can be done...

Lastly, I like the idea of the boffi style exhaust hood and storage shelf above the island which we would lose with the sink. Hopefully with a dishwasher, people will be spending more time at the cooktop and island than they will washing dishes.

I, too, like a handsome wall of wood, but have always felt that washing dishes, day in and day out, several times a day with your back to the room and a solid wall in front turns the drudge of dish-duty into a punishment - like being sent to the corner for bad behavior! A window to gaze out of - that can open, even better - makes a tedious and boring job relaxing, and gives you a chance to "stretch" your eyes. When you cook, you are focused on watching what's going on in the pots and pans - why not switch the location of the cooktop and the sink? While you wash piles of dishes you can keep an eye on kids, be involved with the conversation in the rest of the room, or even watch TV if that's something you do. True, you'd have to move the dishwasher, too, but it's just a thought.

David,

Thanks for the compliments. It does look like the fridge is outside the wall in the rendering, but in the final construction detail the wall will be build around the fridge so it can be recessed a couple inches to end up flush with the counter top.

looks bloody brilliant. nice renders too. can you expalin how the wall behind the sink makes the fridge appear counter depth, if it also runs behind the fridge?

I’d certainly live there. It might be a bit inconvenient to live without a bathroom, though! ;-)
