I use flickr for all of our own images and also the copyblogger theme we are using has very good built in image formatting options for posts. Check out Chris Pearson's themes in the footer. You won't be disappointed...

Thanks. If we can make it work, I am looking into inline exhaust fans that can be mounted near the roof and will be whisper quiet but very powerful in the kitchen. More on that later...

Good examples, Chad. I'm sure that the reality WILL be better than 'basement lighting', but those of us in the 'peanut gallery' rooting for you might still cringe periodically.....;)
I'm glad a range hood is in the plans, personally. When we cook in our (rental) home, the fan in the over-range micro is totally inadequate, as it just vents back into the kitchen...totally lame...
Keep on keepin' on....

I'll have to dig up a couple images of this application in built projects. I have seen a couple instances and it actually looks very nice if spaced properly. We can experiment with different size bulbs to get the right amount of light so it will not be too harsh. Remember that the ceilings will be just over 9' tall and it will be a much different effect than what we are used to in 7' tall basements...

Also, to clarify, there will be a range hood or some form of dedicated exhaust over the cooktop. We are still researching this and it will most likely include lights which is why there is nothing shown there now.

I'll agree w/Shawn (above) on the bare-bulb effect, although CFLs' aren't as bad as incandescents....A simple diffuser would mitigate the look, and could be as simple as a rectangle of translucent white acrylic or glass.

I would, however, add in the kitchen a stub-out for an overhead fan or a vent fan that could be added later. The first time the owner fries fish or anything else with a 'high vapor content', the addition would be appreciated....Besides,air-borne cooking oils don't recognize kitchen boundaries, better to stop 'em at the source.

Hey Chad,

While I definitely appreciate the economy of the exposed CFL, my mind immediately recoils from the memory of walking in basements with exposed light bulbs. Harsh, glaring light right in the eyes. Maybe I'm missing something here, but the concept worries me. Perhaps you lights will be mounted much higher and will mitigate the "interrogation" effect....
